Here’s Why Men’s Shirt Buttons Are On The Right While Women Have Them On The Left

Here's why the men's shirt buttons are on the right while the women have them on the left

1 - Napoleon Bonaparte's scheme to stop women from making fun of him

All his portraits have his right hand tucked into the coat that could only be achieved if the button was left - right. It is said that women used to stick their hands as they did, imitating and mocking him. She then ordered that all the women's garments had buttons on the opposite side so that they could no longer do that.

2-  The women were dressed by the servants and the men dressed

Here’s Why Men’s Shirt Buttons Are On The Right While Women Have Them On The Left

While men usually dressed when it came to dressing, women of old had servants to do that for them. As the servants were mostly deft, it was easier for them to have the buttons on the left.

3 - Men holding swords in their right hand

It was easy for men to unfasten their upper garments with their left hands, for their right was preoccupied with a sword, especially during the war.

4 - The women took the babies to the left

Here’s Why Men’s Shirt Buttons Are On The Right While Women Have Them On The Left

As for the women, they had babies in the left hand to keep their right hand free to unbutton their top to allow babies to breastfeed.

5 - The women rode sidesaddle on the horse, while the men sat astride

As they went into combat, the men sat astride and mounted on the left side of the road so they could use their right hand to hold swords. They took these swords from their left hip and the left side had to be superimposed to the right to prevent the sword's grip from getting stuck in the coat or shirt. The women, on the other hand, were sitting to the left, as they do in cycles and bicycles these days. Buttoning the left did not allow any wind to enter his shirts.

6 - Women wanted to show that they are equal to men and also different

Another theory says that to prove that women are equal to men, many characteristics of men's clothing were taken by them. But they wanted to put some changes to indicate they are different as well. So, the buttons on opposite sides.

7 - Manufacturers and producers wanted to keep this difference

When shirt for both genders went into mass production, such minor changes were what identified the difference between men's and women's clothing.

We hope this solved the strange case of button!
