How To Dress Smart And Casual- Fashion Guide

Just as anything else that trends or evolves, men’s fashion experiences changes over time. Three piece business suits become all the rage for awhile, only to be overtaken by an emphasis on informal wear. Now, many men look for a way to combine both styles in a manner that is chic yet comfortable. It is known as the smart-casual look, and it allows men to look fashionable without being stuffy. This does not mean it’s time to break out the jeans and T-shirt and leave it at that. There are ways to achieve the smart-casual look without appearing disheveled.

Wearing a long-sleeved shirt is a good place to start, but be sure it has a collar. For a bit more formality, you may put on a tie, but it is certainly not necessary. With a tie, you might be tempted to don a suit coat, but that pretty much pushes the needle into formal territory. Sport coasts and blazers are smart choices and can be worn over T-shirts when even more relaxed attire is called for.

Jeans and T-shirts alone may not meet the smart-casual standards, but they are okay when worn with a blazer and whether the event allows it. Because this is as informal as you want to dress and still maintain a smart-casual look, the jeans must be new, washed, and ironed. Comfort is certainly acceptable, but pleated jeans are a much safer choice than standard jeans due to the heightened style they provide. To be absolutely sure, it is probably a better idea to simply keep the jeans in your closet and put on some nice khakis or chinos. Whatever you choose for pants, wearing a belt is absolutely necessary.

If you are wondering why tennis shoes and sneakers are a no-no, it is because they obliterate any semblance of smart. They are far too informal, but dress shoes and leather loafers will get you by. If in a hurry, fancy slip-ons are acceptable. It is possible that you have read somewhere that leather sandals go well with lighter clothing in sunnier climes, but the open toes really detract from the outfit. Brogue shoes and derby shoes are nice, but be sure to throw on a blazer if you wear them.

Men’s contemporary fashion often calls for the smart-casual look. The style works well in many situations from church events to office work. The ladies love the confidence and slight formality it provides as well.
