Barack Obama used his last moments in power to help transgender immigrants.

The 44th President issued a memorandum to the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) to change the rules and allow transgender immigrants to request a sex change on their official documents.

The memorandum applies only to legal immigrants and foreign physicians will now be able to provide statements of evidence for those who wish to make the amendment.

"Individuals may request a sex change reflected on a document issued by USCIS ... [and] USCIS will publish an initial or modified document reflecting the changed gender designation," the memo says.

Obama's work in his final moments at the oval office contrasts sharply with Donald Trump's new government, which removed any mention of LGBT rights from the official White House website.

After its inauguration, Mr. Trump took over the official web page and quickly removed sections on climate change, women's rights and LGBT issues.

The website has been revived and now includes six sections: America's First Energy Plan, America's First Foreign Policy, Job Recovery and Growth, Strengthening Our Military Forces, Defending Our Community Enforcement and trade.
