Sustainable Fashion Design Programs And Courses

There are a number of fashion design programs offered by design schools, colleges and universities. The fashion industry is very diverse therefore there is the need for several different areas of specializations. These specializations are usually offered after a foundation course in fashion design. Students usually choose their specializations after trying their hands at different fields in fashion design and finding their niche or specialty. The area in which they are most skilled at or most likely to succeed at.

The fashion industry is one of the world’s largest industries and therefore has many different opportunities for different people. There are several design programs both offered at associate degree level and bachelor’s degree level. Any fashion degree program will offer the basics of fashion design which are measuring, sewing, drawing, cutting, stitching and others. The programs will also offer courses in the business end of the fashion industry.

Students interested in pursuing this side of the industry may choose to specialize in degrees like Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Marketing. A fashion merchandiser is usually involved in the buying promoting and selling of fashion items and not necessarily in designing. They also analyze trend in the market and use this information to come up with new fashion lines. A program in Fashion merchandising will therefore include courses in forecasting, accounting, data analysis, communication skills, marketing strategies, psychology, consumer behavior and others. This program could lead to a career as a fashion buyers, fashion stylist, advertising agent and product developer amongst a myriad of careers.

A fashion marketing program may seem similar to a merchandising one. It is however a bit different. This program will be based on a business foundation and will focus on marketing principles as applied to the fashion industry. Careers in this field include product development, branding, production and writing.

Fashion Design program will focus more on the creation of fashion rather than on the business end of the industry and requires students to have talent in design. However, fashion designers are also involved in the production and marketing of designs. Fashion designers will most usually end up working at a fashion house or start their own lines.

Interior design programs will bring several different disciplines such as architecture, drawing design, textiles, lighting and functionality. Being talented artistically is also necessary. An interior designer will conceptualize the décor of the room according to the clients’ wishes, choose furniture, set timelines, and do some construction and many other tasks. Courses in interior design will therefore include alongside creative classes, classes in architecture, communication skills, accounting, and marketing. There are also different types of interior designers; some will specialize in residential designing while others in commercial designing.

Anyone considering a career in fashion design has a wide range of programs and schools to choose from. A foundation course in a general design course will provide an invaluable source of information to help a student settle on his particular specialization. Schools that offer fashion design programs will usually provide career guidance to help students make their choices.
