Short History Of Fashion Trends

Fashion is not only what we see on the podiums and not only about what famous designers do. It is much about subcultures and the way people dress, as a way of stating things about them, a sort of language telling the story of the person. There is fashion in goth, skate, or hippie communities, as well as there

is fashion in the haute couture domain. A history of fashion can be sketched, and influences coming from past decades and styles can be spotted in today’s trends.

Charles Frederick Worth, an Englishman who opened the first fashion house in Paris at the end of the 19th century, was the first designer in the history of fashion. In contrast to seamstresses in the past, he dictated the way people should dress and introduced new trends, followed even by people in court. Which makes that more new fashion houses opened. The way of making clothes also changed: artists were directly hired to draw the designs for the future clothes. In this way, fashion houses didn’t have to make the clothes as a model, but show the sketches to the clients and then work on them. Everybody can imagine how clothes looked like in that period: long dresses, with long trains and luxurious accessories.

Once with the outburst of the First World War, clothes and tendencies changed as well. As women had to work too to support families, their clothes had to become more casual and simple. They no longer attended special events, and the mourning of those died on the battlefield imposed new changes in clothes’ colors. Coco Chanel is the most famous designer of this period, known until today for her elegance and class. The new tendencies were short bobs, in terms of coiffure, up-to-the-knee pinafores, an androgynous look adopted by women and the cloche hat. It is also the period when sportswear became popular among men and women.

The 1960s was the next decade to face major changes in the history of fashion. The main thing that changed is that more than one trend was accepted and influences from all across the world were incorporated into fashion. The war was already gone but its consequences influenced the way people were thinking, the appearance of numerous subcultures and thus, fashion in all its facets. It was the time of the Hippies, of the Teddy boys, of mini-skirts and of all the flamboyant designs of established designers, who were still activating in Paris, even though America was beginning to become a fashion center as well.

After the 1990s, fashion becomes once again chaotic and difficult to predict, but that is because of the multitude of tendencies and cultures. Great designers have used many symbols of cultures across the world, and the fact that they still create new collections every season proves that fashion is in fact a big business that will continue to exist. And people will follow tendencies because everyone cares about appearance and because clothes say a lot about the person wearing them.

Both city dwellers and rural residents will celebrate the Barbour Jackets for their countryside look.
